Domain Visibility & Launch Readiness

Shopify helps entrepreneurs and businesses of all sizes build and run their online stores. Getting from zero to launch involves a series of key steps, and domain setup is one of them. As the lead product designer on the Domains team, I worked closely with my team to pinpoint where domain setup was slowing merchants down and focused on streamlining the experience so it never hindered a merchant's speed to market or their ability to scale.

The Challenge

Research revealed two distinct failure points. New merchants were often stuck because the setup guide did not recognize subdomain customization as a completed task, preventing them from launching. At the same time, the domain index table was a disorganized list that lacked clear hierarchy and reliable status indicators. The legacy status badges were focused primarily on technical errors, providing no clarity for new users and offering zero scalability for power users managing multiple storefronts and complex domain portfolios.

What I Did

I led a multi-faceted redesign to support merchants at every stage of their growth. We first updated the setup guide logic to validate subdomain customization as a launch milestone. I then refactored the legacy error-based badges into a streamlined system centered on an intuitive "Connected" status. Finally, I restructured the index table using a new hierarchy that groups domains by storefront and nests redirects under primary domains. This new architecture surfaces quick actions directly in the table, eliminating deep navigation for both new users and high-volume merchants.

The Outcome

The redesign transformed domain management from a confusing administrative hurdle into a professional, self-serve dashboard. By validating subdomains as a launch milestone and clarifying domain relationships, we accelerated the path to market for new businesses while providing a scalable framework for power users. The improved status indicators and organized structure significantly reduced merchant uncertainty and decreased reliance on support, empowering merchants to manage their brand identity with confidence as they grow.
