Storefront Web Components

Shopify Storefront Web Components is a new library that lets merchants and developers integrate Shopify's commerce capabilities into any website with just a few lines of embedded HTML, without writing complex JavaScript or GraphQL code. Joining the project midway, my focus was on the playground experience itself: making it a polished, approachable tool with well-executed examples that anyone could reference and build from.

The Challenge

The previous Buy Button app was a rigid, legacy solution with minimal design flexibility. Beyond its limited layouts, most web component libraries are overly opinionated, forcing developers to use specific CSS properties. This made it difficult for brands to maintain a cohesive design language when embedding Shopify's cart and product data into external platforms. The opportunity was to make the playground showcase just how easy and flexible these new components were, for developers and non-developers alike.

What I Did

I joined mid-way to lead the final polish and execution of the Web Components Playground. Working closely with developers, I helped transform the playground into a high-performance tool where anyone can tinker with live code. As a designer with a front-end development background, I designed and coded the production-ready templates that merchants use as copy-and-paste starting points. While building and testing the examples, I discovered critical race condition bugs caused by nesting web components, which the team was grateful to catch before launch. My focus throughout was on creating templates merchants could copy directly into their own projects, while ensuring the playground itself was a joy to use.

The Outcome

The launch delivered a localized, responsive solution that gives developers complete design control. By providing a polished playground with live-code examples, we transformed the merchant workflow from struggling with rigid app constraints to building high-fidelity, custom commerce experiences on any site. The project was featured on Hacker News to strong reception, with praise particularly for the playground experience. This project successfully brought the power of Shopify's GraphQL engine to the entire web with zero design friction.
