Metafields let merchants store specialized product data beyond Shopify's standard fields. Despite their flexibility, merchants could not use this data to create automated collections, forcing redundant workflows where the same information had to be duplicated just to ensure products were categorized correctly. As lead product designer on the Metafields team, I partnered with engineering, product, and cross-functional teams to remove this friction.

As metafield adoption expanded, merchants hit a significant bottleneck: they could not use this specialized data to drive automated collections. This forced redundant workflows, duplicating the same information across variant options, tags, and metafields just to ensure products were categorized correctly. The fragmented data management created a "source of truth" problem and significant manual overhead, preventing merchants from fully adopting metafields as a scalable way to organize their stores.
I designed a streamlined experience that allows merchants to use product metafields as dynamic criteria for automated collections. To ensure the feature was both powerful and intuitive, I partnered with the Merchandising team to replace legacy browser dropdowns with a custom Shopify component. The new selector features clear section labeling to distinguish standard product fields from metafields, including an intentional empty state to encourage metafield adoption. To maintain platform performance, the initial release supports up to 60 conditions across key data types like boolean, text, and integers, with optimized logic for equality and range-based filtering.
The feature was officially released as part of Shopify Winter Editions 2023, resolving a primary merchant pain point by providing a stable and precise alternative to manual product tagging. The launch eliminated redundant data workflows and allowed merchants to automate collections using complex variant-level data for the first time. The release received immediate praise across merchant communities for its accuracy, establishing metafields as a fundamental tool for scalable store organization and significantly reducing manual inventory management.
